The Paktor team was ready to implement a change that they believed would increase engagement by making the like and dislike buttons more emphatic and thus more tempting to click. The default version of the app had thumbs up and thumbs down icon for liking and disliking. For each potential match, the user has three available actions: swipe to the next match, like the match or dislike the match. The core function of Paktor is the user’s ability to indicate likes and dislikes of the potential matches shown. It even has a translation feature so international connections are not an issue. If two users like each other, Paktor will make the connection. They swipe through pictures of potential matches and select the ones they like and dislike. Users securely register for Paktor with their Facebook account. With Paktor, finding a match is as simple as a swipe and a click. With one of the largest user bases in the region with over 1.5 million registered users, Paktor has enabled over 40 million matches to date. Other than that, popular chat apps such as LINE have also launched their own desktop versions.
Going web seems to be a natural progression for mobile chat apps nowadays - in January, WhatsApp announced that it is now available on web, albeit for Android users only. It’s a lot more convenient, especially if you’re already seated in front of your laptop - you don’t have to toggle between your phone and computer every time you want to check/scroll through the app. The functions on the web version are also similar to what you would experience on the mobile app: you can use the web app to discover new friends on Paktor, clicking ‘X’ if you don’t like what you see, and ‘√’ if you do.
